Question

Q: Please excuse my remedial questions about these devices. But I need internet access capable of video conferencing on my boat when I'm away from marina wifi and in motion , possible within 3 miles of shore. ATT is telling me that there is no difference between this device and their mobile hot spot or cell phone hot spot. Thanks in advance

Q: Hello, is the only difference between the APAC/EMEA model and the North American model in the number of bands offered? The APAC/EMEA model offers all the same bands as the North American model so I'm considering buying the former since I will use it around the world. However, I will mostly use it in North America and want to make sure there is no draw-back to getting the APAC/EMEA model given the primary use it will get.

While hotspot devices are similar to routers such as the BR1 Pro 5G, there are a number of advantages to using the BR1:
- The BR1 can operate on any network whereas hotspots sold by carriers are locked to that carrier. There are also two SIM slots allowing you to have two plans and select the carrier with the best coverage if you like. This is especially a major consideration as you travel to other countries and want to use a local SIM card.
- The BR1 can be used with very powerful external cellular antennas (such as the Maritime 40G) for extended range and performance.
- The BR1 supports WiFi WAN allowing you to connect to marina WiFi and other public hotspots as an alternative to cellular to save cellular data. This can be setup to happen automatically.
Using a phone as a hotspot can work ok in some cases but you do not have the ability to add external antennas and using the phone as a hotspot will drain your phone battery faster.

The APAC / EMEA model will work fine in North America. As you have pointed out, that model has a superset of the bands supported in the NA model. So if you plan to use the device in Asia / Pacific and Europe, then the APAC / EMEA model will work best outside of North America.

Yes, the core functions of the BR1 or any PrimeCare product will continue to work beyond the one year period where PrimeCare is active. Once the one year is up, the warranty will have expired and you will no longer have access to SpeedFusion and Incontrol2 features, although subscriptions for those can be licensed separately if needed. Otherwise the router will work fine.

The new 8.3.0 firmware release add a new VWAN feature that allows you to convert one of the ethernet LAN ports into an additional virtual WAN port. It appears this feature will be included with 8.3.0 at no extra cost. 8.3.0 should be released in February 2023.
Re antennas, most people go with a 4x4 antenna, such as the Maritime 40g, with the BR1 Pro. However two 2x2 antennas, such as two Maritime 20G antennas, works very well and in some cases might be better for signal propagation. If you go with 2 2x2 antennas, be sure you use the same antenna for both.

That is correct. The BR1 has one cellular modem and therefore one IMEI associated with that modem. It also has two SIM slots but only one can be used at a time. The point of this is allow the user to put two different SIMs in the device and be able to select the one they want to use based on manual selection or via rules. For example, if you have a card from one carrier and the signal is weak you can either automatically or manually switch to the other SIM from a different carrier to get better coverage. But again, only one SIM is active at any time.

Yes, that is easy to do.
You can simply create a second SSID WiFi network with its own name and password and have guests connect to that.
If you want to get more control, you could setup a captive portal but it is a bit more complicated.
You can also assign a guest role for people who connect via the guest network and limit bandwidth or app use as well as other QoS limits if needed. These features can be found in the Advanced page of the Dashboard. Contact us if you need further assistance.

The Peplink MAX BR1 Pro 5G should be able to work with any high quality 4x4 cellular antenna system that is designed for use with 5G bands. That said, we have not tested the Peplink products with Winegard antennas so we can't absolutely say these will work together since the AIR360+ is a multifunction antenna and I have not seen the specs for the cellular interface. I'd recommend asking Winegard if this antenna can be used with a third party 4x4 5G router and see what they say.

Yes, you can use the MAX BR1 Pro with 24vDC. It will accept 9 to 30vDC. We include a free DC power cable when you purchase from us.
The new X62 model supports all the common LTE and 5G bands and should work anywhere in the world with an appropriate SIM or eSIM.

Yes, the X62 model covers all bands used in North America, EMEA and APAC and supports 5G carrier aggregation and other advanced features. So there is no longer a need to choose between a North America model and a EMEA/APAC model. The only other consideration is the X62 modem module is manufactured in PRC vs. the other 5G X55 models being manufactured in Taiwan.
